Last September the club was contacted by a fellow netball player and member of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, based in Windsor, asking if we were willing to donate some kit for them to take on their trip to Kenya. The aim of the trip was to conduct a community engagement operation and develop their relationship with the locals. Their vision was, for the different battalion sports reps to give training in their sport and have small games with the Kenyan’s.
With the help of many generous Eagles parents as well as Royal Netball Club and the Marist School, we collected quite a bit of kit, from trainers, to bibs to netball dresses.
On her return from Kenya, our Army contact Jen, sent this report:
Half of the kit went to a vocational center that had a under 18s team. The trainers donated were greatly appreciated, as a lot of the girls were playing on a grass field in leather school sandals and shoes. They loved the netball uniforms, balls and bibs as this is something they have not had before. We played a short game of netball against the girls, which was great fun, there was smiles all round.
The British Forces Community Engagement Team have been working alongside some schools and orphanages, and have built netball posts for them. Unfortunately due to the small time frame I had to visit these areas I was unable to get to these places. Therefore I left some kit with the community engagement team to deliver in January on my behalf. They have ensured that they would send me some photos of this and the younger girls wearing the uniforms, trainers and being handed the netballs.
